If you caught Joe Bloggs off the street and asked him what 'average' meant, he would probably say 'mean'. Not 'median'. Your reader is, of course, technically correct but I bet, the vast numbers watching ESPN have lower than average (mean) level of clarity with respect to statistical concepts. As such the colloquial usage of 'average' to mean 'mean' is quite appropriate. Thanks.
