ah! all is clear. makes sense that nitrogen-fixing ability wouldn't have been he main concern.:)

Maybe just the term "grains" would work, since that carries a sense of tininess, e.g. "Anyone with a grain of sense.." "There's a grain of truth.." as well as the obvious botanical reference.
