Posts like this are admittedly not hard to come up with, because there are so many people out there who fancy themselves to be everyone else's grammar instructors (see Geoff Pullum today on this point). Nevertheless:

Your host enjoys reading Blue Oval News, a website devoted to discussions of all things Ford. Today, there is a thread in their forums discussing an article on Ford's ownership of Hertz. The arguments for why manufacturers shouldn't be in the rental business are many, varied, and generally all sound, but the company nevertheless has seen fit to defend the business. That's not the linguistically interesting part. The response that follows is:

How wrote that? A third grade student?

Please check the first paragraph. It is a poorly written and structured sentence. The text of the article explains nothing except the residuals are better (which everyone already knew).

If one is going to complain about the poor writing on display in a news article, it's best not to lead off with a glaringly ungrammatical question like "How wrote that?". The first paragraph of the article in question is:

In amongst the tedious facts and figures of the Ford analysts’ conference yesterday was a good question, writes Rob Golding. The man from Merrill Lynch asked: “What is the point of owning Hertz?”

Here SC must confess to a certain ambiguity in deciding whether or not to flame the message board writer for saying "Please check the first paragraph. It is a poorly written and structured sentence." On the one hand, the first paragraph consists of two sentences, which would appear to indicate that this complaint is idiotic for the simple reason that the man can't count. On the other hand, the piece is signed at the bottom with the byline "Rob Golding", suggesting that in fact the first sentence should have been set apart as a description of the article that follows, like so:

In amongst the tedious facts and figures of the Ford analysts’ conference yesterday was a good question, writes Rob Golding.

The man from Merrill Lynch asked: “What is the point of owning Hertz?”

This is not an unheard of practice; The Guardian does the same thing all the time, as can be seen in many of the blurbs on their front page. Read the first way, SC can imagine how one might think that there was coreference between "Rob Golding" and "The man from Merrill Lynch", which makes parsing the first sentence somewhat awkward; read the second way, there is nothing at all mysterious or hard to interpret. Even under the first reading, though, your host just can't imagine a third grader producing such a sentence, but it's no use arguing -- when it comes to language, everyone's an expert.

(On an unrelated note, while using Google to pull up that last link, I saw the most bizarre ad in the sidebar where Google puts up "sponsored links". Check it out, and see if you get the same highly implausible result.)

Моему очень хорошему другу и знакомому Неустроеву Денису Вячеславовичу срочно требуется операция головного мозга.
Ко мне обратились за помощью он и его родители. Парню 19 лет, и полгода назад все мы узнали страшную новость: у него нашли прогрессирующую опухоль головного мозга (гипофиза). Все осложняется тем, что опухоль не совсем доброкачественная, т.е. сейчас у нее средний (промежуточный этап между доброкачественной и злокачественной). Родители хватаются за последнюю соломинку , чтобы спасти сына, поэтому они обратились ко мне за помощью. А я не могу просто пройти мимо.
Очень нужна ваша помощь и совет. За этот год (2009) он перенес уже две операции , срочно нужна третья. Необходимо собрать около 10 000 доллоров. На первые две операции родители взяли кредит, влезли в долги и вот теперь, нужна третья, но такую сумму они уже собрать не в состоянии. Поэтому нужна помощь. Любая, которые вы можете оказать. Будем благодарны, если подскажите возможный благотворительный фонд, где могут помочь или какой-то путь и решение как собрать эти деньги. "Мой сын Неустроев Денис Вячеславович 1990 года рождения с начала 2009 года перенес две тяжелейшие операции по удалению опухоли головного мозга - 16 сентября в Донецке и 29 ноября в Киеве.
Во время проведения первой операции случилось обильное кровотечение. Операция была приостановлена. Вторая операция была сделана в Киеве , продолжалась более 8 часов . Из-за большой потери крови (2.5 л) операцию приостановили. Опухоль была удалена частично.
Опухоль имеет прогрессирующий рост и угрожает полной потере зрения и , конечно, жизни. Необходима срочная третья операция с большими запасами крови.
Очень просим всех, кто может в состоянии как-то нам помочь. Обращались в городской совет, частым лицам. И везде слышали отказ. Только депутат Литвинов Леонид Федорович оказал материальную поддержку в размере 200 дол. Очень нужен совет куда можно обратится еще , кто может помочь, очень просим вас откликнуться на мольбу матери , которая только хочет видеть здоровыми и счастливым своего единственного сына.
Для проведения операции , до и после операционный период необходимо ориентировочно 80 тыс. гривен ( 10 000 дол).
Из них:
60 тыс гривен на проведение самой операции (указано в справке нейрохирурга).
15 тыс. гривен на до операционное обследование (подготовка к операции): Магнитно-резонансная томография мозга с контрастом , Магнитно -резонансная артериография головного мозга, анализы на гормоны.
5 тыс гривен послеоперационный период (койко- место 20дол. в день). , вливание крови, анализы и т.п.

Операция должна проводится в Международном центре нейрохирургии. Проводить операцию будет известный врач Курилец Игорь Петрович. В этой клинике есть единственный в Украине Навигатор, который позволяет делать операцию с большой точностью, которая очень необходима Денису.

Мы , родные , не в состоянии набрать необходимую сумму на операцию , т.к. уже были проведены две операции за эти полгода, на которые были использованный все средства и по сей день выплачиваются долги. Я и его отец пенсионеры с маленькой пенсией. Набрать хоть какую-то сумму не в состоянии.

Взывая на ваше милосердие, прошу Вас помочь мне. Я надеюсь, Вы, услышите крик о помощи отчаявшейся женщины и моего сына , которые нуждаются в Вашей милости и поддержке.
Может у кого-нибудь есть какие-то связи, или Вы можете мне что-нибудь посоветовать......

Вот так живёшь и знаешь, что такое случается, но почему-то всегда уверен, что с нами этого никогда не произойдёт... А больно вдвойне, когда такое происходит с близкими и друзьями.
