Soft to dry/hard up is no stretch for me. Think about a grass runway, or glue, or icing or roadkill. Most soft wet things become hard and dry, especially ground. perhaps the yielding makes more sense if you think in terms of travelling over the ground. "Desert gave way to fertile farms as we journeyed eastward" sort of thing.
