« The devaluation of reading skills | Main | Illocutionary force minus the force »

April 24, 2004

How're you gonna keep 'em down on the farm, once they've seen Paree?

Perhaps it's not so much a degradation of attention spans, as a failure of lectures to measure up to raised expectations. By comparison to a dancing bird that is shortly replaced by zebras and then followed by monsters near and far, a grade one teacher can be pretty dull stuff.

A student who won't sit down and read a novel cover to cover can play the same level of the same video game every waking minute for a week. A student who has difficulty putting together enough articulate sentences to call a paragraph can stay up all night writing computer code that obeys much more rigid syntax rules.

Just because they aren't paying attention to what you want them to, doesn't mean they aren't paying attention.
