Some companies, for some sports, have gone back and figured more-recently-developed statistics for long-gone players and teams, so it's possible to say that a team was on top of the rankings in the 70s, even though the rankings weren't invented until the 90s.

Of course, if the team didn't exist, the statement is still nonsense---although the reference might've been to the *organisation*, in its prior incarnation in Montréal.
