language hat

I'm sure you're correct about the phonological anticipation, but I want to take advantage of your comment facility (because -- all together now -- Language Log doesn't have one) to mention that it seems to me LL is getting a trifle too caught up in this whole "eggcorn" thing. It's a mildly interesting phenomenon, perhaps more than mildly interesting if you're of a certain disposition, but it seems to have become the defining feature of LL, and that strikes me as excessive. When it gets to the point that you're excitedly blogging about an error that gets a few hundred Google hits, it's time to step back and say "Yes, people make a lot of mistakes in reproducing words and phrases... Next!" But that's just me.

Semantic Compositions

Fair point. But it's really easy to crank those posts out, which makes them very tempting to write.

The real trick to get them to write on other issues is to bait them with commentary on their own writings in other places. Nobody would ever stoop to that just to get them to respond, though, would they?

(I'm kidding, I'm kidding; Monday, I'll have a reply up to Prof. Nunberg's generous response to our recent series here, but I definitely didn't do all that work just to get an LL mention.)
